When is Republic Day?

SL Europe, freight forwarder inform , always celebrated on June 2nd. This is Italy’s National Day.

Republic Day (Italian: Festa della Repubblica) marks the referendum of 1946, which resulted in the creation of the Italian republic.

History of Republic Day

Italy became a nation on March 17th 1861, when most of the states of the region and the two Sicilies were united under King Victor Emmanuel II, hitherto king of Sardinia.

The father of Italian unification was Count Camillo Benso di Cavour, the Chief Minister of Victor Emmanuel.

Rome stayed under the rule of the Papacy for nearly 10 years and became part of the Kingdom of Italy on September 20th 1870. This is the final date of Italian unification.

On June 2nd 1946, a referendum on the monarchy led to the establishment of the Italian republic, and Italy adopted a new constitution on January 1st 1948. Male members of the royal family were sent into exile because of their association with the fascist regime and were only allowed to return to their country in 2002.

Italy’s constitution now forbids a monarchy to ever rule again

In 1977, the national holiday was moved to the first Sunday in June, for economic reasons to avoid the holiday having a negative effect on working hours. It stayed on the Sunday until 1999, when June 2nd was made the official date.

Italian exports shipments to non-EU countries decreased by 9.9% in 2020, thus recording the worst trend since 2009, despite the rapid recovery that started in May. Istat notes this in the latest report in which it also gave outcome of the results for the month of December.
For more than 6 percentage points, the decline is explained by the drop in sales of capital goods and non-durable consumer goods. The contraction, spread to all the main outlet markets, was lower than the average for Switzerland, the United States, China and Japan, while the contraction was greater in India, ASEAN countries and OPEC countries.

Particularly in December, trade with non-EU countries dropped in both directions: exports decresed by 4.6%, while imports decreased by 1.3%. Overall, Italian imports in 2020 recorded a contraction of 15.3%, for more than two thirds caused by the collapse in purchases of energy products.

However, it should be noted that the October-December 2020 quarter is an improvement compared to the previous one. In particular, exports grew by 4.0%, supported mainly by growth, energy (+ 12%), durable consumer goods (+ 7.9%) and capital goods (+ 5.2%).

If no other particular upheavals occur in the coming weeks, the global shipping companies active in containerized shipping are preparing to provide  to a 2020 full of financial satisfactions. How great these satisfactions will be are shown by the quarterly numbers that are coming out in the last hours.

On the other hand, the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index, the index that since 2009 has been tracking and recording the trend of sea freight rates for the transport of containerized cargo by sea, has just reached a new all-time high. Last week it closed with a record high of 1,857.33 points, crumbling the previous peak of 2010. At the beginning of the year the same index stood at around 1,000 points.

At the moment, the rates for direct shipments to Northern Europe are cheaper, being equal to $ 1,508 per Teu container. On the other hand, freight rates from Asia to the ports of the US west coast ($ 3,887 for each 40’GP) and the east coast ($ 4,676) continue to travel at more than double levels. The most expensive of all, however, are the rates for shipments by sea from Asia to South America (Brazil for example) where a 20′ GP pays 4,294 dollars.

Zim celebrated in the third quarter of 2020 the highest profit ever obtained by the company in three months of operation: between July and September the Israeli carrier in fact recorded a profit of 144.4 million dollars, up by 2,814, 4% compared to the profit of 5 million for the same period in 2019. The revenues for the three months were equal to 1.012 billion dollars (+ 20.3%) and the average freight per container Teu embarked of 1.176 dollars (+16, 6%).
Ap Moller Maersk closed the third quarter of 2020 with revenues down -1.4% to $ 9.9 billion, while EBITDA rose 39% to reach $ 2.3 billion. Merit, they say from Copenhagen, of the agility with which the hold capacity is managed, the cost reduction, the attention to the offer for customers and the temporary increase in the demand for shipments “. The main driving force on the group’s activities was maritime transport which, despite a lower number (-3.6%) of containers transported in the quarter, saw the net result grow by 511 million dollars, which reached 1.8 billion. dollars. Ebitda also increased by 25.4%. An important contribution also came from the Logistics & services division.
Other quarterly reports will be made public in the coming days and will confirm the very positive months that shipping companies active in container transport are experiencing in 2020.
