El tráfico alrededor del planeta se vio afectado por la emergencia del Coronavirus y ahora los números que cuantifican todo comienzan a reflejarse. Otros datos provienen del tráfico marítimo, en este caso del Canal de Panamá. En comparación con 2019, de hecho, hubo una caída del 3.2% de enero a abril, el peor resultado en los últimos 5 años. A pesar de esto, el volumen de carga transportada aumentó.
Las cifras publicadas por el Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censo (INEC) de la Contraloría General de Panamá hablan de 4742 barcos que transitaron en los primeros cuatro meses de 2020 contra 4899 del mismo período de hace un año. La comparación de los períodos de referencia de los últimos años indica cómo en 2019 el tránsito creció un 0.3%, disminuyó un 1.5% en 2018 y aumentó un 5.5% en 2017.
Paradójicamente, el volumen de carga transitado a través del canal ha aumentado: un buen 9% más que el año anterior, con un aumento en el tonelaje de 6.1 puntos porcentuales. Esta aparente contratendencia se debe a la combinación de barcos que cruzaron el canal de Panamá: los que corresponden al estándar de tonelaje Panamax, que pueden cruzar las más antiguas, disminuyeron (-9.2%), a favor de una mayor cantidad de Neopanamax (+ 23.2%) que puede aprovechar las construidas después de 2016.
Al ser más buques de gran capacidad pertenecientes a la segunda categoría, terminaron afectando favorablemente las toneladas de carga almacenadas a pesar de la disminución general de los tránsitos.
