The growth of air cargo at Italian airports continues at full throttle. According to Assaeroporti, airports across the Peninsula handled 104,700 tons of goods in September, representing a 12.7% increase compared to the same month in 2023. The development of air shipments in Italy has therefore continued at a faster pace than that observed globally (+9.4%) and across Europe (+11.7%).
Looking at the Peninsula’s leading airports, Malpensa progressed by 4.9% to 58,962.7 tons. In second place, Fiumicino grew by a significant 27.9%, reaching 23,595.1 tons. Third place is held by Venice, which recorded a growth of 49.5% with 5,995.3 tons, followed by Bologna with 4,870 tons and a 12.2% increase compared to September 2023. Brescia completes the top five with 3,571.8 tons handled, an increase of 30.7% over September last year.
Broadening the scope to the period from January to September 2024, Assaeroporti data shows that Italian airports collectively handled 929,360 tons, 17.3% more than in the first nine months of 2023. As of the same date, global air shipments—according to IATA data—are growing at a steady but lower rate of +12.6%.
Of the total, 541,488 tons are attributable to Malpensa, which grew by 9.9%, and 204,991.9 to Fiumicino, an increase of 53.7%. Venice accounts for 46,360.2 tons (+31%), Bologna for 42,230.8 tons (+11.8%), while Brescia accounts for 27,468.7 tons (+8.7%).
